The fictitious world was well imagined and detailed. The characters, not so much. Katniss (dumb name) didn't have any flaws that I could see, just too sweet, too cute. Without flaws, there's no room for character development. And while brave, she didn't seem much of a heroine. Her strengths all seemed centred around the stereotypical nurse everyone to health, but limited in ability to defend even herself (sheesh, even the little girl was more capable!). Is that all it takes to inspire men to come to the rescue? More depth, please!!! The silly woman running the lottery was another over-the-top caricature. Tough to take.
