I think they were trying to prevent areas from getting affected and trying to have a realistic scenario of how a mass pandemic could travel fast and how we need to react. It's the same as "Contagion" except on a faster scarier scale. I freaking HATE zombies! The only thing I fear..creepy bastards. Enjoy.
